The 71st Berlinale will be launched today with an Industry Event while majority of the 2021 selected films can only be seen by the public in summer. For this year’s Retrospective, a programme featuring three different American actresses namely ‘No Angels – Mae West, Rosalind Russell & Carole Lombard’, includes 27 productions made between 1932 and 1943, the heyday of the screwball comedy. The films were chosen with a focus on the strict morality rules of the Motion Picture Production Code. The code prohibited explicit depictions of sex and promiscuity, as well as the use of profanity. Yet during that period, these three women succeeded in shaping their own film roles, finding their own style, and subtly subverting the code.
