The Nitrate Picture Show returns and opens at the George Eastman Museum today. Watching archival nitrate prints projected in the Dryden Theatre, one of the few venues in the world equipped to exhibit highly flammable nitrate film is such a privileged experience.
Nitrate film is renowned for its breath-taking images. The higher silver salt content in nitrate stock made richer blacks and whites, and shimmering grey tones. Films produced in Technicolor’s three-strip dye-transfer process exhibit vibrant colours. No analogue intermediaries or digital scans can compare with their original beauty and authenticity.
